Recent government legislation, including the Corporate Manslaughter Act is placing
greater pressure on companies and
organisations to fulfil their 'duty of care'. For the first time, organisations
can be found guilty of corporate manslaughter as a result of serious management
failures resulting in a gross breach of a duty of care. The Corporate
Manslaughter Act clarifies the criminal liabilities of companies including
large organisations where serious failures in the management of health and
safety result in a fatality.
'Employers have a legal obligation to identify the
risks to workers and anyone else, for example members of the public, who may be
affected by their work activity, and to take appropriate action to counter
these risks. Employers should conduct a 'risk assessment' to help them fulfil
this legal obligation.'*
Statistics
show that the highest risk at work for employees is on the road. It is estimated that on a daily basis 4
people die and 250 employees are seriously injured in work related driving
incidents. With such serious pressure on your company how can you fulfil the
duty of care towards your employees on the road? Research shows that occupational driving
assessments and development training can reduce the risk of collisions by up to
70%.
